Indiana School Boards Association

ISBA Legislative Resolutions

The Indiana School Boards Association is an organization of school boards throughout the state of Indiana.  From a modest beginning in 1949, the Association has grown to the point that its membership is responsible for controlling and directing the education of the public school children across the state.

There are 290 Indiana school boards that belong to the ISBA, with a total membership of 1,685 persons.  Sixty percent of all board members are directly associated with business, industry, or agriculture.  There are 465 women (27.6%) serving on local boards.

The vast majority (93.8%) of the school boards are elected by the local citizenry, while 5.8% of the boards are appointed by other elected governmental bodies or officials in the local communities.  There are 284 local school corporations that have either 5 or 7 members serving on the school board.  A vast majority of the boards (75.2%) are seated and/or reorganized in July, 24.2 percent take office in January and .6 percent at other times.  The annual compensation for school board members varies with the local community, but 250 corporations provide members $2,000 per year.

The ISBA Legislative Committee, a standing committee of the Indiana School Boards Association, is appointed annually by the Association President.  The survey forms requesting legislative concerns and issues are collected by the ISBA office from board members throughout the state.  The committee review the results of the survey and develops the proposed legislative package to be presented to the ISBA official delegates during the Fall Conference.  At that time, following debate and discussion, the official delegates adopt the following list of resolutions.  The resolutions become the guidelines used by the ISBA staff during the 2007 General Assembly.
