Assisting School Boards in the Superintendent Search

Selecting a superintendent:

The Board's most important responsibility

The recruitment and selection of a successful superintendent of schools takes time and expertise and is the most important responsibility your board will ever undertake. It is important that the selection procedure, as well as every step of the process, be planned with care and integrity.

How can ISBA help?

The Indiana School Boards Association offers a service to assist local school boards in search of a superintendent. Each search is designed to meet the needs of your board by specifying details and advising you of your options.

ISBA services

Assisting in the planning process

Reviewing a candidate profile (qualifications)

Assisting in the development of the contract and benefits

ISBA representatives, who are advocates for school boards, are knowledgeable about    the superintendent search process. But ISBA's assistance does not end with the employment of your new superintendent. The Association maintains an ongoing program by offering multiple advisory services.

What ISBA will do:

Help establish criteria for selection by:

Reviewing candidate qualifications by working with the board.

Reviewing other information about the school corporation, the staff and the community for use in the brochure.

Mailing a brochure and application form to Indiana Superintendents of Schools and University Placement offices.

Placing announcements on ISBA's electronic communication system.

Handle the logistics of:

Accepting telephone calls regarding the position.

Assisting the board in developing interview questions.

Assisting the board in developing a smooth, professional interview process.

Aid during deliberations and final selection by:

Consulting with the board on unusual situations that may occur.

Providing the board with Indiana salary and fringe benefit data.

Why ask ISBA to help?

The ISBA approaches the process from the Board's point of view. It is a personal approach, focusing on your school corporation and its particular needs.

ISBA knows the territory. The person conducting the search process is knowledgeable of current education issues. The ISBA representative will also know the superintendent's job market.

ISBA has an intricate network around the state and nation.

ISBA has an ingrained appreciation of and sensitivity to the selection of the superintendent of schools. The association is dedicated to the principle of local control and recognizes that the local school board has the knowledge of: their own communities; extent of citizen activism; network of school support organizations; history of dealing with superintendents- virtually every facet that bears directly or indirectly on the selection process.

Look to ISBA to advise you in the search process. We do the advising and the board makes the decisions.
