Each January, the Indiana School Boards Association encourages school corporations to observe School Board Appreciation Month by honoring school board members and the important contributions they make to the education of our children.
As school governance leaders, school board members give their personal time and energy to making decisions that support student success, and their commitment deserves recognition.

Sample Activities
• Customize the School Board Appreciation Month graphics provided in the toolkit by adding names and photos of your School Board members and your corporation logo. Use the graphics throughout the course of the month to celebrate, thank, and honor your School Board members via social media, school and corporation websites, and weekly newsletters.
• Place appreciation messages on school marquees.
• Write and post short biographical profiles, or create and post video interviews, of each of your School Board members. Allow them to discuss why they serve.
• Schedule a reception before or after your January School Board meeting and present each School Board member with a Certificate of Appreciation or a thank you card.
• Ask your parent-teacher organizations, booster clubs, foundation, and alumni association to recognize School Board members at their gatherings, in their organizational newsletters, and on social media. Offer to have a School Board member come and speak to their group.
• Ask your county council, city council, mayor, town council, or township trustees to pass a resolution or issue a proclamation in support of School Board Appreciation Month.
• Send a press release to local media announcing your plans to observe School Board Appreciation Month. Ask your board members why they serve and use their quotes in the news release. Include a quote from the superintendent acknowledging the board.
• Contact a reporter or editor at your local newspaper, radio, or TV station and pitch them a story about the president of the School Board, or the School Board member with the most seniority. Offer to coordinate interviews.
• Write a letter to the editor sharing success stories, highlighting the service of School Board members, thanking School Board members for their dedication and collaboration, and previewing one or two major decisions and actions the board is facing in 2026.
• Seek guest appearances for the School Board President on morning TV or radio news programs.
• Encourage student newspapers, student-run radio programs, and student TV news casts to include stories on School Board Appreciation Month. Encourage students to interview board members.
• Ask students to sign their names on a poster expressing their collective appreciation. Hang the poster in the boardroom.
• Invite board members to the next high school basketball game and introduce and honor them at mid-court during a timeout or at halftime. Include a message thanking School Board members in the athletic program.
